Rosehip oil is also known as rosehip seed oil. It is derived from the rosa canina rose bush, a wild rose species native to Europe, Northwest Africa and Western Asia. Unlike rose oil, which is extracted from rose petals, rosehip oil is pressed from the fruit and seeds of the rose plant.
Rosehip oil is packed with antioxidants, trans-retinoic acid (a natural form of vitamin A), vitamin C, vitamin E, phenolic compounds and beta carotene. Rosehip oil is also a good source of vitamin F, a fatty acid made of linoleic acid or omega-6 and alpha-linoleic acid or omega-3.
The fatty acids helps to restore and rejuvenate the skin, brighten hyperpigmentation, calm inflammatory skin conditions (including acne) and improves skin barrier function. The antioxidants helps fight the effects of DNA damaging molecules called free radicals that plays a key role in aging and disease.
Rosehip oil is non-comedogenic and have many potential uses when a person applies it to their skin. It hydrates and moisturises the skin, helps treat and reduce scars and fine lines, treating acne prone skin and eczema, lightening age spots, helps boost collagen formation and improves the appearance of stretch mark.
Free radical fighting benefits of rosehip oil includes protecting the skin from sun damage, reversing some sun-induced signs of aging and reducing skin inflammation that can cause conditions, such as eczema and acne.
